Black walnut trees (Juglans nigra) have a substance in their roots (juglone) which can be toxic to many plants. The ones cited here may be tolerant, but there are no guarantees of this.

With the Emerald Ash Borer destroying Ash trees in the Great-Lakes region, it bacomes necessary to find new trees to diversify, rather than relying on one variety or species to fill all landscaping needs. These trees (primarily deciduous) are worth consideration in your landscape.
